FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has recently launched the food safety Mitra scheme. The Food Safety Mitra Scheme has been launched by FSSAI with an aim to provide support to all the small and medium food businesses in India in terms of compliance with the food safety laws. The Food Safety Mitra (FSM) Scheme will lead to improved case of doing business by creating a transparent and organized ecosystem supporting food businesses wherein food businesses will be able to get trained service providers at fair prices – lowering the cost of compliance, thereby out the process of FSSAI Registration.
Who is a Food Safety Mitra?
Food Safety Mitra is an individual who undergoes training and certified by FSSAI to perform activities on behalf of food business operators with respect to the implementation of FSSAI Act, Rules and Regulations.

Types of Food Safety Mitra
The food safety Mitra is divided into three categories as given below:

Digital Mitra
- Apply through FSM website
- On being shortlisted, complete the online training.
- On completion of training, appear for CBT at one of the specified test centres.
- On successful completion of assessment, Digital Mitra certificate is issued – to the renewed every 2 years.

Trainer Mitra
- If a candidate meets the criteria for being a trainer, he/she will be registered under FoSTaC.
- The candidate will complete the classroom training & assessments to become a certified training Mitra, as per FoSTaC norms
- Validity of the certificate will be 2 years

Hygiene Mitra
- If a candidate meets the criteria for being a hygiene auditor, he/she will be registered as a candidate for Hygiene Mitra
- The candidate will complete the classroom training % assessments to becomes a certified Hygiene Mitra
- Validate of the certificate will be 2 years.
A candidate may opt for any one or more variants of the Food Safety Mitra for example a Digital Mitra can also be Hygiene Mitra, provided he fulfils all the prescribed qualifications and criteria.
Roles and Responsibility
The roles and responsibility of the Food Safety Mitra are listed out:
Digital Mitra
- Online filing of a new application for registration or license.
- Online application filing for a modification of registration or license.
- Online filing of annual returns.
- Online applications filing for approval of Product/Label/Advertisement Claim.
- Online appeal filing for revocation of suspended registration of licenses.
Trainer Mitra
- To conduct training at Eat Right Campuses
- To conduct training of food safety supervisors
- To conduct training of food safety personnel in businesses on demand.
Hygiene Mitra
- Auditing hygiene of Food Business Operators (FBO) outlets as per guidelines.
- Assisting FBO with the implementation of hygiene guidelines.
- Conducting training for food safety supervisors and food handlers about hygiene and safe food handling practices.
